What Is Galactomyces?

Galactomyces ferment filtrate (GFF) is a byproduct of fermenting Galactomyces yeast. The story behind it is often cited: in the 1980s, researchers noticed that sake brewery workers had rough hands but remarkably smooth and youthful-looking facial skin. This observation led to the isolation of the fermentation filtrate, eventually becoming the core ingredient of SK-II’s Pitera.

Free Amino Acids
Glutamic acid, serine, alanine, and others that mirror the composition of the skin's Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF). These replenish the stratum corneum's water-binding capacity and help smooth skin texture.
B-vitamins (Niacin, Panthenol, Inositol)
Niacin (a niacinamide precursor) inhibits melanosome transfer, supporting brightening. Panthenol offers anti-inflammatory and hydrating effects. Inositol contributes to cellular signaling and barrier function.
Organic Acids (Low-Level AHA)

The mechanism is the gentle cell turnover promotion from organic acids combined with amino acid-driven NMF replenishment.

Brightening and Tone Evenness

The niacin-derived components inhibit melanosome transfer (the same mechanism as niacinamide), and antioxidants produced during fermentation indirectly reduce UV-triggered melanin synthesis. The brightening effect is indirect and cumulative — galactomyces doesn’t block tyrosinase directly the way niacinamide or vitamin C do, but consistent use leads to a more even complexion.

Moisturization and Barrier
